The Doctrine of Signatures
I have long been interested in the concept of the Doctrine of Signatures. We all know the basics.......a walnut looks like a brain and the oil of the walnut, the Omega 3s are of course good for the brain. A cut carrot reminds us of an eye and we were all told as children that carrots help us see in the dark. And on it goes.
For me, it truly does not end. Every plant has a certain colour, smell, texture, shape, habit, environment in which it thrives, pH that it prefers, lifespan. It also has a botanical name often with an interesting meaning, a history, a country of origin. All these things tell us broad and deep information about the plant.
With access to scientific information, and using our common sense we can take some guesses about what we might be able to use the plant for. The plant's signature may be what captures out interest first up. I remember one day looking at a nasturtium flower and thinking to myself:
"Looking at this flower makes my eyes feel SO good I wonder if it may actually be good for the eyes?"
I then jumped on Google and found that the nasturtium flower is very high in Lutein, known as the "eye vitamin". I have been throwing a few flowers into my morning juice ever since.
I have many stories along these lines. I have been blessed with a life that has given me the opportunity to sit with nature and have it open up to me when I am receptive enough to take it in. It is not a gift, it is a sense that is available to everyone. When you open yourself up to the information that Mother nature is trying to impart to us there are no limits to her generosity.
