Contains the powerful comfrey root and leaf oil predominantly, along with some yellow dock and lavender infused oils and Kunzea essential oil. Certified organic olive oil is the base and it is totally harmless to the horse if it licks the balm. It can be used for fractures, bruises, muscle soreness, soft swellings and skin conditions.
The making of the Equine Balm was quite serendipitous. A woman came to me to buy comfrey plants to feed her horse who had mildly fractured a bone in his knee. The vet was not hopeful. I gave the woman some old stock of my Comfrey Comfort Massage Balm, which I had been making for years for humans. It was just a small jar so she applied it sparingly. After a few days, she felt that the horse was definitely behaving as if he was more comfortable so she asked me to make a large jar. I did some investigation, changed the formula a little and sold her a large jar. She lathered it on to the horse in great quantity. The next day the horse's knee had swelled up!! I freaked out a bit but felt it was some kind of healing reaction. After a few days the swelling went down, the woman went back to applying a smaller amount and within a few months the horse's knee was much improved.

Our Equine Balm is now available in both Regular and Extra Strength Kunzea essential oil concentration. The regular is fine for most applications. The Extra Strength is recommended when the condition requires more pain relief.

ABOUT OUR COMFREY OIL:
As well as being high in allantoin which encourages cell regeneration comfrey root is also very high in silica. The roots are very smooth and slippery due to this silica content. This imparts a wonderful effect on the skin. As well as being known as "Knitbone" comfrey has also been know as "a woman's best friend" due to its skin regeneration properties. It is for this reason that it should not be used on open wounds as it can heal over the skin too fast, but is great for rashes such as nappy rash, psoriasis etc. and especially good for scar tissue.
I make both comfrey root oil and comfrey leaf oil, I believe that the comfrey root oil is deeper acting than the leaf oil, however the combination of both is very powerful. The root is harvested in late winter when the levels of allantoin, the most active ingredient, are highest and when its properties are strongest. It is then processed by cleaning and removing the root bark. The silky, slippery roots, which you can see in one of the photos are then infused into Australian certified organic extra virgin olive oil, applying minimum heat for maximum potency. We then infuse the leaves, harvested in spring, into the root oil.
The oil is made in small batches to ensure maximum freshness and we have developed methods to ensure maximum potency all year round. It also includes a little natural vitamin E and rosemary extract which are both rich in antioxidants and lengthen shelf life. It has a lovely earthy scent which is not affected by the rosemary extract.
